DCB Owners Regatta A National ‘Family’ Reunion

There was a time—and it wasn’t all that long ago, maybe just five or six years—when the annual DCB Performance Marine Owners Regatta in Lake Havasu City, Ariz., was almost exclusively a Western states affair. Participants who lived Arizona, California and Utah were the most common. DCB owners from other states were rare.

Those days are done. Among the 60 DCB catamaran owners and their guests heading out today for a lunch run to the Pirate Cove Resort are Kellie and Julie O’Hara of Upstate New York, their fellow New Yorkers Ken and Renee Lalonde, Greg Harris and Yvonne Aleman of South Florida, Dan Kuhn of Southwest Florida and Greg and Heather Scheller of Kentucky.

“We appreciate members of the DCB customer-family from all over the country and we hold this event every year to let them know how much we appreciate them,” said Jeff Johnston, the president of the company, during last night’s welcome. “There wouldn’t be a DCB Performance Marine without them.

“But it is really nice to see that family growing in the Midwest and Southeast, as well as on the East Coast,” he added. “DCB is a lot more national than it used to be.”

Of course, there are still plenty of West Coast folks in the mix including Dave and Buffie Megugorac, who have homes in Camarillo, Calif., and Lake Havasu City. The Megugoracs spend most of their time running Bananas XL, their DCB M44 Widebody catamaran on Lake Havasu, though this summer was an exception.

“It was so hot here that we spent seven weeks at Lake Powell this summer,” Dave Megugorac said. “And we’re having a heat wave now. It’s hot again.”

When the locals say it’s hot, it’s hot. Midday temperatures for yesterday’s lunch run to Havasu Springs topped 110 degrees. The only breeze available was created by the forward motion of the 30-something boats in the mix. Inane comments such as, “Yeah, but it’s a dry heat,” were blissfully absent.

For the record, a kiln produces dry heat. Make of that what you will.

Also for the record, the weekend’s event has already produced significant go-fast boating news. DCB has an M45R Widebody in the works, and the new 45-foot true-tunnel cat will be powered by sterndrive engines.

The Phoenix-based builder has four orders so far. The first build is slated to be on the water by July 2025.

Today is forecasted to be every bit as kiln-like as yesterday, so lunch-run participants will need to hydrate as if their lives depend on it—because they do. They’ll have plenty of time to cool off before tonight’s dinner celebration and awards ceremony.

Tomorrow, those who hang around will get a look at DCB’s new 5,000-square-foot office and storage space in Lake Havasu City. It is neither a dealership nor a delivery center. It’s an outpost for the company.

The weekend fun is just getting started, and when it’s over, the participating members of the DCB faithful will travel home. But for more and more of them, that means heading East.
