DCB M37R Cat No. 33 Coming To Smith Mountain Lake Home

DCB M37R Cat No. 33 Coming To Smith Mountain Lake Home

That DCB Performance Marine has completed 33 of its M37R catamarans since introducing the model in 2020 proves a couple of things. First, there was demand for a full-tunnel catamaran from the Phoenix-headquartered company. Second, that demand was not limited to buyers out West. DCB M37R cats have found homes on both sides of Florida, Upstate New York/Indiana, Georgia and more.

And now—after a brief stop at Super Cat Fest West April 10-13 in Lake Havasu City, Ariz.—a 37-footer will arrive at Virginia’s Smith Mountain Lake as the property of Scott Witt, who has lived at the pristine waterway for the past 15 years with his wife, Jaime, and started coming to the lake with his grandparents when he was nine years old

The Mercury Racing 500R outboard-engine-powered creation will be the fourth catamaran owned by the Virginian. He previously had a Nor-Tech 40 Roadster, a DCB M33R and a Wright Performance 360.

The catamaran’s helm is clean and modern.

Smith Mountain Lake covers more than 20,000 acres and has 500-plus miles of shoreline, but it is not—for any numbers of reasons—a high-performance boating hotbed. It gets busy in the summer, especially on weekends. As he did with his other cats, Witt will take a conservative, respectful approach with his new prize on the waterway.

“If we run 70 mph 80 mph, that’s as fast as we need to go there,” he explained. “I am very careful. Nobody else drives my boat. I don’t drink and drive.”

The creative seating arrangement in the cockpit created maximum legroom for all occupants.

Of course, he’ll have plenty of opportunities to open it up a bit this season during the Florida Powerboat Club Emerald Coast and Key West poker runs.

Though Witt has experienced the ride of M37R catamarans thanks to friends who own them, he has yet to drive one. Nor has he ever visited Lake Havasu. Both will change next month during Super Cat Fest next month. It’s going to be a quick trip on and off the water, as the couple plans to arrive in Las Vegas on Friday, drive to the lake and then depart Sunday morning.

“I haven’t driven an M37R but I’ve been in a few, and they were nimble and quick,” he said. “I like a quick boat that’s how mine is propped. I am not necessary looking for top speed.

“I ran in one at the Lake of the Ozarks,” he added. “It definitely can handle rough water.”

Thanks to side-entry steps, cockpit access is simple.

The DCB team will keep the catamaran as its facility in Lake Havasu City for display during the Desert Storm Poker Run later that month. Then it will be hauled back to Smith Mountain Lake.

When it came to his boat’s seating configuration, Witt got creative and—custom builder that it is—DCB was more than happy to oblige. The two rear seats are mounted in the aft-center of the cockpit and flanked by molded steps for entry and exit. A mid-cockpit bucket seat is set forward of each walkway and behind the driver and co-pilot buckets.

Said Witt, “That’s what attracted me back to DCB, the look and the fit and finish.”

The result is maximum space for every passenger in the boat. It’s a clever set-up that other DCB buyers will likely repeat. And of course, it is immaculately executed.

“That’s what attracted me back to DCB, the look and the fit and finish,” Witt said, then chuckled. “I am very OCD about little things, like storage compartments. Everything has to be perfect.”

By the end of April, the 37-footer will be at home in Virginia.
