DCB Delivers Second Dazzling M42R Catamaran—In Color

DCB Delivers Second Dazzling M42R Catamaran—In Color

Owned by Kris and Shelby Hansen of Southern California, the first DCB Performance Marine M42R catamaran is a mostly white creation with red and black accents. So, too, was the first and equally elegant M37R cat from the Phoenix-based builder, which makes sense as it also went to the Hansens.

The second DCB M42R catamaran has been delivered to its owners.

Yet the color choice also makes sense at the builder-showcase level—at least if the builder is confident in its gelcoat and lamination abilities. That’s because any mold-work imperfections have no place to hide on a white boat. It is the most unforgiving color choice in boat-building.

DCB’s mold work, of course, is impeccable and requires no forgiveness, as hull No. 2, delivered last week to a couple in the Pacific Northwest demonstrates. Though the media-shy couple didn’t go with loud colors for the full-tunnel 42-footer powered by twin Mercury Racing 500R outboard engines, they did opt for silver with white with green accents.

The 42-footer boasts and an exposed carbon fiber tunnel.

That’s not to say the cat is devoid of edgy aesthetic elements.

“We did a fully exposed carbon-fiber tunnel front to rear with the DCB logo in gelcoat,” said Tony Chiaramonte, the vice president of the company. “It’s rad.”

Unlike the first 42-footer and “six or seven” 37-footers built to date, according to Chiaramonte, the second M42R has just six seats, per the owners’ specifications.

The owners ordered the 42-footer with six seats rather than eight.

“You can dance in there,” he quipped, then laughed. “But most 42s will have eight seats.”

Not surprisingly, the second build took less time than the first. Chiaramonte said the DCB team “shaved hours” off the process and will continue to find production efficiencies with the new model.

Viewed from any angle, the latest DCB M42R catamaran is a beauty.

As with the first M42R, the second cat’s performance needs no improvement.

“I ran the boat on Lake Pleasant in Phoenix last Thursday with John Teague,” Chiaramonte said. “The wind was blowing 30 to 40 mph. It was so strong that we could barely get it back on the trailer. And in that heavy wind and wind-chop, it was rock-solid at 110 mph.

“When we delivered it at Lake Havasu a couple of days later, it was blowing 20 mph sustained and it ran 129 mph, still rock-solid,” he added.

Tapping Mercury Racing 500R outboard-engine power, the cat reached 129 mph on Lake Havasu in blustery, less-than-ideal conditions.
