Crockett Rigging Canopied Single-Engine Shootout Brute

A moderately unhinged Lake of the Ozarks Shootout fan-favorite, high-performance marine engine-builder Tyler Crockett skipped the 2025 event. His new-to-him, canopied 32-foot Phantom V-bottom wasn’t close to ready to compete in the annual Central Missouri. And it’s still not, as you can see from the images below.
But the single-engine speed-machine is getting there.

Crockett said he is planning to start testing in July.
“I’ve been making great progress,” Miller said via telephone interview yesterday. “The gimbal for the drive, trim tabs and a custom water-pickups are mounted. The seat brackets are done and powder-coated. I’m cutting-in the steering column tonight and working on the dash.
“I have been weighing the parts like trim pumps and things to put the weight in certain places,” he added. “Plus, everything I fabricated with CNC machine either gets powder-“coated or anodized.
Crockett, who owns Crockett Marine Engines in Ruby, Mich., last competed at the Shootout in 2021, when he laid down a 132-mph run in his open-cockpit 26-foot Joker V-bottom. After that wild, scary-to-watch pass he decided that moving into a larger single-engine V-bottom for the top-speed competition wouldn’t be a bad idea. He’s been working, as precious few breaks from paid engine-building work allowed, on the Phantom for more than a year.

The supercharged engine reportedly makes 4,000 hp.
As previously reported, the 32-footer will be powered by a 481-cubic-inch engine with a crank-driven Procharger running up to 50 pounds of boost. Maximum output for the supercharged mill, according to Crockett, is 4,000 hp.
“I have a complete Fuel Tech fuel-injection system,” he explained. So I can have a 2000-hp tune set-up and then step it up with a push of a button.”
The Michigander is confident he’ll have the boat finished in time for August 27-28 event.
“I plan on having it ready to test in early July,” he said.

Helm installation for the 32-footer is underway.
