Crockett A Question Mark For The Lake Of The Ozarks Shootout
Outside of American Ethanol throttleman John Cosker of Mystic Powerboats in DeLand, Fla., and local favorite Carrie Sixkiller, few if any veteran Lake of the Ozarks Shootout competitors have more fans than Tyler Crockett. The Ruby, Mich., engine-builder and offshore racer last ran his 26-footer powered by a 3,000-hp engine of his own creation at the 2021 event in Central Missouri to a heart-stopping 132 mph. He planned on upping that number last year, but a engine-parts shortage forced him to stay home during Shootout week.

Crockett has been so busy with his engine business that he “didn’t touch” the 26-footer this spring and won’t have time to get it ready for the 35th annual top speed contest, the competition portion of which is set for August 26-27.
“I had 30 or 35 engines to building this winter spring,” he said. “We’ve been really busy.”
But among those engines is an 1,800-hp supercharged beast he built for a Rumble Fish V-bottom, an unusual one-off 35-footer that is all of five feet wide and will compete in the Bracket 300 class this weekend at the Offshore Powerboat Association St. Clair River Classic in Michigan. Crockett, who has turned down the boost to detune the engine to 1,475 hp, plans to test the boat today and—if all goes well—run it in the St. Clair event.
Imagine this 35-footer tearing down the three-quarter-mile Lake of the Ozarks Shootout course next month.
“I just want to make sure it doesn’t run like a three-legged deer on ice,” he said, then laughed.
If Crocket likes how the unusual yellow boat performs, he’ll run it in the Shootout. If not, he’s out again this year.
