Commentary: Monster Energy/M CON Raceboat Video At 250,000 Views

Released six weeks ago, the Scrapyard Media/Speed On The Water video chronicling the build of Tyler and Lindsey Miller’s Class 1 Monster Energy/M CON raceboat reached 250,000 views today. That’s a mighty strong number, one that took a village to make happen, for a 32-minute documentary on a YouTube channel.

And that milestone got me thinking about the dedication and commitment real storytelling demands.

Take Scrapyard Media founder Brad DiMaggio, for example.

DiMaggio began shooting during the ninth annual Speed On The Water Key West Bash on Thursday, November 10, 2022, where he captured interviews with Azam Rangoonwala of Powerboat P1 and Steve Curtis of the Class 1 Huski Ice Spritz team. He finished shooting on Wednesday, May 17, at the Lake of the Ozarks in Central Missouri, where he captured the Miller’s Skater 438 catamaran in its first—and only—test session before team driver Craig Amptmeyer hauled it to Cocoa Beach, Fla., that weekend for the Class 1 season-opener.

No one was sure the test-session would even happen until the call came in. But come in it did just 24 hours before the boat hit the lake.

So Brad and Katie DiMaggio hopped in their well-traveled SUV and drove 12 hours from their Michigan home to the Lake of the Ozarks to snag the last bit of footage they needed to complete the project.

During the long ride home, Katie drove and Brad edited. It was the last of many road-trips the Scrapyard Media crew, including relatively member Bobby Boyd, made to the lake this year during the rigging of the catamaran led by M CON crew chief Jake Leckliter and Performance Boat Center service manager and M CON throttleman Myrick Coil.

As no one involved was certain the test session would even happen before Cocoa Beach, DiMaggio had most of the documentary complete before he and his wife headed for the Lake of the Ozarks one more time. That made producing and publishing the final version with the test-session footage included in time for race weekend—the deadline we set last fall—a non-event for him.

DiMaggio even got a full night’s sleep before the video aired.

None of this happens, of course, without solid financial backing, which M CON, Performance Boat Center and Powerboat P1 stepped up to provide. That needs to be said, again and again.

To everyone involved in this project, we offer our most heartfelt gratitude. It’s not every day you can say that something you were part of producing captured the interest of a quarter-of-a-million people in just six weeks.

And it’s not done attracting eyeballs yet. Not by a long-shot.
