In a perfect go-fast boating world, there would be more summer weekends, preferably of the three-day kind. No sane and fun-loving person will disagree with this.

But we’re stuck with the calendar we have, which means in parts of the country that include a pesky season called winter—the real kind with snow and stuff—there are just 12 summer weekends open to event organizers. And that means excellent boating events will fall on back-to-back weekends from time to time.
It’s simply inevitable.
The perfect example of this are the Boyne Thunder and 1,000 Islands Charity poker runs. The Boyne event happens in Northern Michigan this weekend. Tucked away in Upstate New York town of Clayton, the 1,000 Islands Charity event happens the following weekend.
Both are exceptional, family-oriented events. Both non-profit happenings support worthy causes that can change the lives of children.

In that same perfect go-fasting world, details such as getting back to work—the thing that funds your hobby—resources and travel distances wouldn’t matter. But, of course, they do, so most would-be participants of those events have to choose between one or the other.
The “good” news for those who didn’t sign up months ago for Boyne Thunder? It’s sold out so you don’t have to consider it. The July 14-16 1,000 Islands Charity Poker Run, however, does have a few slots left. If you’ve never done it and suddenly find yourself with the time and the means, there’s still time to sign up.

Which won’t matter to you at all if you’ve already signed up for the second-year Tiki Lee’s Shootout On The River—an up-and-coming event—in Sparrows Point. Md., as it happens on the same July weekend.
More than a few times each summer, go-fast boating events land on the same weekend. Such is the case with Big Thunder Marine’s Baja, Donzi and Fountain Fun Run—or BFD for short—and Performance Center’s Outboard Fun Run. Both runs happen on July 22 on the Lake of the Ozarks in Central Missouri, which is where both dealerships are headquartered.
The good news here is that one event is brands-specific and the other is propulsion-specific, which is a fancy way of saying there won’t be much overlap among would-be participants.

You can wring your hands over event-schedule overlap, but that’s the unavoidable price we pay for having options 12 weekends each summer. So whatever your choice, enjoy it.
Because you can always do something different next summer.
