Commentary: Bellying Up For Labor Day Weekend

Chances are good that if you ask Jason Johnson and me to support your event by donating a speedonthewater.com banner, some branded schwag or even a few bucks, you’ll get it. That’s not just because we’re generous with support, especially when it comes to events benefitting charities as almost all of them do these days. It’s good, grassroots-level marketing for our brand.

Waterfront On Buckeye Lake is a popular hangout for Buckeye State powerboat owners.

But the weirdest request we’ve had for support to date came from Chad Miller, an Outerlimits V-bottom owner who lives with his wife, Ravin, and their pug, Carbon, in Ohio. In late July, Chad reached out to me via text message.

“My company, Build Pro 360, is putting on a belly flop contest at my buddy’s huge bar and restaurant called Waterfront on Buckeye Lake on Sunday September 1, at 5 p.m.,” he wrote. “We have a DJ and $1,000 grand prize. We are doing banners and T-shirts for sponsors. Would Speed On The Water want to sponsor for $100?”

I responded immediately, “No. We’ll donate $200. But we want video.”

A bit of backstory: Through event coverage during the years, we’ve become friends with the Millers. Chad has a wicked-dry sense of humor. Ravin has more spark and energy than the two 700-hp engines in their 39-foot boat.

So come tomorrow at 5 p.m., we’ll support grown men and women attempting to punch the biggest holes possible in Buckeye Lake with their mostly round stomachs for 1,000 bucks and the glory that comes with an angry-red belly.

Chad and Ravin Miller struck a pose with speedonthewater.com chief photographer Pete Boden during the Rock The River Fun Run in Cincinnati earlier this month.

All in good fun, of course, and we’re proud— if that’s the right word—to do it. That’s especially true given how much the Millers love and support their local hangout.

“Buckeye Lake’s Waterfront is our go-to spot for good times and great friends,” said Chad. “The staff is like our second family, always making us laugh and ensuring we have an amazing time.”

We can’t wait to see the video.

How could anyone say no to this?
