Colby To Join Swofford For 2023 Race World Offshore Livestream Broadcasts

You may not recognize his face, but as an offshore powerboat racing fan you surely know Eric Colby for his fine writing and reporting. Not only does the former Powerboat magazine editor and award-winning journalist cover the sport for speedonthewater.com, he’s a steady contributor to mainstream boating outlets around the country. Colby is among the best in the marine journalism business and he is far and away the best reporter the offshore racing world has ever seen.

From broadcasters to races, plenty of veterans will kick start the offshore racing season next month in Marathon, Fla. Photo from the 2016 Super Boat International Grand Prix courtesy/copyright Yvonne Aleman.

But starting with the 7 Mile Grand Prix, April 28-30 in Marathon, Fla., fans will get a chance to put a face to the name. Colby has joined the Race World Offshore livestream team and will work side by side with veteran Key West-based radio man Todd Swofford.

“I’ll do the play by play and Eric will do the analysis,” said Swofford. “I have a lot of respect for Eric—he’s into offshore racing as much as I am. He enjoys it and it’s going to be a pleasure working with him.”

As a former offshore racer who competed alongside the likes of California’s Nigel Hook in offshore racing’s A Class and Craig Archer in B class, Colby combines real-world experience with his outstanding reporting and writing skills. He has never strayed far from the sport and enjoys strong rapport with its competitors, from veterans he got to know during the early 1990s in his Powerboat magazine days to novices across all classes, race producers and organization leaders.

Colby will bring the same level of detail to his live broadcast work that he does covering the sport for speedonthewater.com.

That’s something few reporters covering the sport can claim. Plus, Colby has been at it for 30 years.

“Having been lucky enough to race, I think it’s easier for me to translate what’s going on in a raceboat to the fans,” he said. “I’m a fan of all forms of boat racing and I hope that having covered multiple styles gives me some unique insights.”

“I know I didn’t race for that long, but the experience I’ve been so fortunate to have combined with being a journalist who has covered the sport three decades gives me a perspective most reporters and analysts don’t have,” he added.
