Coil And Tomlinson Pumped For Super Cat Reunion

Coil And Tomlinson Pumped For Super Cat Reunion

Joining forces for this weekend’s Thunder On Cocoa Beach offshore races on the Atlantic side of Florida, driver Myrick Coil and throttleman John Tomlinson last shared the cockpit of a Super Cat-class raceboat—a 42-foot MTI—during the 2019 Race World Offshore Key West World Championship. So it’s fair to say it’s been a minute, as the currently trendy saying goes, for the once-dominant duo.

Running a Skater 388 Powerboats catamaran, the Performance Boat Center team duo was coming off Super Cat world titles in 2016 and 2017. They couldn’t quite complete the trifecta the following year, but they still finished second overall behind WHM Motorsports.

Follow a frustrating 2019 season and the pandemic-canceled 2020 season, Osage Beach, Mo.-based Performance Boat Center opted out of its Super Cat sponsorship. Instead, the multi-brand dealership and service center focused all of its energy on Coil and throttleman Rusty Williams in the Performance Boat Center Super Stock-class raceboat and earned a world title in 2021.

As previously reported, Tomlinson is replacing M CON/Monster Energy owner/throttleman Tyler Miller, who is recovering from back surgery, in the team’s Skater 388 catamaran, in this weekend’s Cocoa Beach event. And though Coil wishes Miller could be alongside him on Sunday, he’s not exactly disappointed with his replacement.

Coil and Tomlinson’s last Super Cat race together was in a 42-foot MTI catamaran.

“I talked to Johnny last week,” Coil told a reporter during a Mother’s Day pleasure-boat outing last Sunday following Saturday’s Performance Boat Center Spring Fun Run. “He asked, ‘How’s the boat running?’ I said, “Just like our last boat—only it”s faster.’

“When Tyler told me he was out he didn’t even have to ask me who I wanted as a replacement throttleman,” he added, then laughed.

Seven teams have registered for Thunder On Cocoa Beach Super Cat race so far.

Tomlinson, who will throttle the Class 1 Morpheus8 Offshore Victory catamaran with owner/driver Carlos de Quesada and the TS Motorsports 450R Factory Stock-class MTI with owner/driver Taylor Scism this weekend, is equally eager to reunite with his former Super Cat-class teammate.

“I am definitely looking forward to it,” Tomlinson said. “Myrick and I have known each other a long time and run a lot of raceboats together. I am looking forward to getting back in a Super Cat with him.”

Backed by Performance Boat Center, Coil and Tomlinson won back-to-back Super Cat world titles in 2016 and 2017.

With Miller and Coil sharing the cockpit, the M CON/Monster Energy teamed squeaked out a win at the Race World Offshore 7 Mile Offshore Grand Prix in Marathon, Fla., late last month when the race-leading Dirty Money team of throttleman Bill Pyburn, Jr., and driver Brit Lilly ran out of fuel on the final lap. Beau Renfroe, the Georgia-based owner of the Dirty Money team, said he is expecting a similar battle in Cocoa Beach this Sunday, where conditions are expected to be tame.

“It should be an action-packed race,” Renfroe said.

Coil agreed. “Dirty Money is going to be right here all year,” he said, then chucked. “And I bet they won’t run out of gas this time.”

Though no Super Cat team in the currently registered seven-boat fleet can be counted out, M CON/Monster Energy and Dirty Money have to be class favorites based on their dominant performances in Marathon last month.
