Canopied Outerlimits SC 37 Cat Edges Closer To Completion

Canopied Outerlimits SC 37 Cat Edges Closer To Completion

Now that its hull, deck and canopy have been laminated together, all that remains for completion of the first canopied Outerlimits Offshore Powerboats SC 37 catamaran is interior, rigging and paint. Of course, these are not small tasks. The team at the Bristol, R.I., company must enter the catamaran’s cockpit through the canopy to install and finish the interior, which is being handled by Ryan Schwarzen of Kutting Edge of O’Fallon, Mo. The interior access and confined space makes the job more labor-intensive than it would be in an open cockpit boat.

“But that’s really the only way to do it because the hull, deck and canopy need to be all bonded together,” said Dan Kleitz, the company’s general manager. “And the canopy has roll bars.

The hull, deck and canopy for the first canopied Outerlimits SC 37 catamaran have been bonded together.

“From the first canopied GTX 47 to the  SV 43 and SV 52 V-bottoms and the SC 48 and SC 46 catamarans, no one in the industry has built more canopy models than Outerlimits,” he added. “It’s a niche in the market we excel at.”

Going to a repeat Outerlimits owner based in the Midwest, the 37-footer is being built as a six-seat pleasure boat rather than an offshore raceboat for the popular 450R Factory Stock class. But in addition to the hatch atop the canopy, the cat will have a hull-bottom escape hatch between the sponsors. Kleitz said the company and client have yet to choose a painter for the boat.

“We may start with a solid color and a wrap,” he said.

Power will be supplied by a pair of Mercury Racing 500R outboard engines. The SC 37 will be the client’s first catamaran and first outboard-powered model from Outerlimits.

“You know, the V-bottom guys who move into our cats love them because of the way they handle—and tackle rough water,” said Kleitz. “And because of the canopy this one will extend the buyer’s boating season.”
