Angling Artists: John Rice
John Rice is an illustrator and realistic painter who specializes in fish and marine life.
Growing up in Upstate New York, John fished for trout, bass, and walleye will his dad before graduating with a bachelor of fine arts from Syracuse University.
His work was first published in Field and Stream, and he’s since done work for Outdoor Life, Saltwater Sportsman, and L.L. Bean, with prints published by Stripers Forever, Trout Unlimited, and the Coastal Conservation Association.
John was introduced to surfcasting by Ken and Lori Vanderlaske, who he met at a trout unlimited dinner. He began fishing for stripers from the beaches of Long Island and Martha’s Vineyard.
“I always wanted my paintings to tell a story. If the subject was surfcasting, I wanted to capture the magic moment. The full moon, the tide running just right, and the plug being cast right where it needs to be.”
