An Outerlimits Rarity, Part 2—The Sole Eliminator-Built SV 29
In January 2014, Eliminator Boats of Mira Loma, Calif., began construction on a single-engine V-bottom sportboat that wasn’t part of its Eagle series of mono-hulls. The model was an Outerlimits Offshore Powerboats SV 29.
Through a deal between Outerlimits founder Mike Fiore and Bob Leach of Eliminator, the founder and then-owner of Eliminator, the company built just one of them. Fiore, who introduced the SV 29 at the 2014 Miami International Boat Show, died in August of that year and the deal went sour and the SV 29 tooling eventually was hauled back to Outerlimits.
Originally designed and built by Outerlimits, this red, white and black beauty is the only SV 29 ever built by Eliminator Boats.
One year ago, the Mercury Racing 600 engine-powered boat became the property of Cumming, Georgia-based Chas and Candice Owens, and they ran it at this weekend’s Pirates of Lanier Charity Poker Run. Badged as an Eliminator but built in Outerlimits designed-and-fabricated tooling, the V-bottom consistently drew crowds at the docks.
Most passersby, even of the performance-boat-loving kind, had no idea of the boat’s unique history. They just knew it looked fast and sexy.
Aside from a few upgrades, the boat’s has not changed since the couple took delivery a year ago.
One more distinction? The Owens’ SV 29 is the only one with all of the graphics handled in the gelcoat process.
The V-bottom had 200 operating hours on it when the warm and gracious couple took delivery of it. Tony Garrison and his team at Merlin Marine, a Mercury Racing and Mercury Marine dealer and Pirates of Lanier Charity Poker Run backer based in Buford, Ga., went through the boat “from head to toe” in the offseason.
“We changed a few things, like going with a five-blade propeller and improving water-flow to the engine,” Chas Owens explained. “We also upgraded the electronics by going from six-inch screens to 10-inch screens.
“We love the boat,” he continued. “I never dreamed we would own anything like this in our whole lives. And the best thing? Candace loves powerboating as much as I do.”
Chas and Candace Owens couldn’t be more delighted with their 29-footer.
Now the boat has 300 hours.
Dubbed Outlaw Woman, the SV 29 will go back to Merlin Marine in the winter for top-end refreshment—as well as a new Stage III Whipple supercharger—on its 600-hp engine. But before then, the Owens will run it in next weekend’s Florida Powerboat Club Emerald Coast Powerboat Week Poker Run.
The couple will finish their boating season with the Florida Powerboat Club Key West Poker Run in early November. They will depart with the Thursday fleet and return Monday.
“We’re splurging,” Owens said. “We never dreamed we would do anything remotely like this in our lives. We saved a year for it.”
Chas Owens said he never dreamed he would own a boat like the Eliminator.
