In the News: Catalina Fun Run Returning With New Dates And Two-Night Format

Some traditions are worth abandoning. Take the traditional Father’s Day weekend dates for the Catalina Fun Run in Southern California. The celebration of all things dad came and went last weekend without the seventh annual event happening because it’s set for September 23-25—a typically fine time of year for weather and water conditions in the Golden State.

“This year, two of our regular fun-runners, Adam Grandorff and now Brianna Brown-Grandorff, decided to get married in Cabo San Lucas on Father’s Day weekend and a few of our key attendees went with them,” said photographer Erick Bryner of Firedrill Productions, who organizes the event with fellow Southern Californians Daren Van Ryte (another ace West Coast shooter) and Corey Vodvarka. Given that and the fact that ‘June Gloom’ usually is a threat to our photo helicopter—last year we couldn’t lift off due to a low ceiling—we decided to move the dates to later in the year.

“I suspect these will be our new permanent dates,” he added.

In addition to new dates, Catalina Fun Run participants also will enjoy two nights in Avalon on Catalina this year rather than the traditional one-night stay on the island.

“Since we are the only ocean-based performance boating event left on the West Coast, I thought it would be nice to take advantage of our island oasis and turn it into more of a destination event—with homage Stu Jones and the Florida Powerboat Club,” said Bryner. “The itinerary is to make the run out to Avalon on Friday, with our typical arrival party at Descanso Beach Club that afternoon.

An eclectic mix of go-fast boats is always on hand for the Catalina Fun Run.

“On Saturday, we’ll make a short day trip run to Two Harbors where we’ll enjoy a semi-private beach party under the cabanas, he continued. “We’ll return to Avalon that evening, and then make the crossing back to the mainland on Sunday morning where we may do a raft-up in Emerald Bay near Laguna Beach.”

Priced at $40, “early bird” registration for the event is open.
