Gallery Of The Week: An Outboard Parade In Fort Lauderdale – Speed on the Water
As a general rule, entire powerboats do not photograph well at boat shows. And closing today, the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in South Florida is no exception.

Why?
First, the boats are more or less on top of each other, so getting a clean shot of a single vessel is next to impossible. Everything is shot from dock level. Unless the photographer goes with a weird wide-angle image or the vessel is on the small side, getting an entire boat in the frame is rough duty.
Plus, boats photography much better when they’re running. Why else would this media outlet spends a small fortune on helicopters for photo shoots?
But isolate the elements, say the outboard engines powering a given catamaran or center console, and things come into focus, so to speak. Speedonthewater.com chief photographer Pete Boden was at the show on Friday and shot everything he could, but what stands out are the array of colorful outboards—most of the Mercury Racing kind—he captured.
And that provided all the elements and incentive needed for the gallery above.
