Inside SOTW Mag: Mercury Racing’s Perfect 10
To kick off its 50th anniversary celebration and introduce its new V-10 outboard engine on the eve of the Miami International Boat Show, Mercury Racing threw a swanky private bash in a parking-structure venue reimagined to look like a South Beach nightclub. The event attracted all sorts of high-profile marine industry types and assorted media hacks—this one included—and likely will go down as the Miami happening of the decade.

But the real show began the following morning at Grove Harbour Marina in nearby Coconut Grove, where the Fond du Lac, Wis., company had set up an invitation-only demo event showcasing the naturally aspirated outboard engine on an array of boats including an M4200 center console from Mystic Powerboats of DeLand, Fla., and an MTI 390X catamaran from MTI in Wentzville, Mo. Between those models and others from DCB Performance Boats, Outerlimits Offshore Powerboats and Nor-Tech Hi-Performance Boats, the venue hosted hundreds of demo rides for would-be buyers who reserved sea trails through the builders on hand.
“The midrange acceleration and fuel efficiency of the new 400Rs is incredible,” said John Cosker, the owner and founder of Mystic, who just returned from a photo shoot with the 400R-outboard-equipped 42-footer in the Abacos Islands where he put 400 miles on the boat. “And they are so quiet. You don’t have the supercharger noise you have with the 450s. I sat on the rear bench during one ride at 70 and I could talk to the person sitting next to me without having to raise my voice.”
Members of the Mercury Racing team who made the new V-10 outboard and its debut event possible posed for a well-earned photo opp.
