222 Offshore Australia Teammates Awarded Sam Griffith Trophy

The dynamic cockpit duo of the 2023 Union Internationale Motonautique Class 1 World Championship-winning 222 Offshore Australia team, driver/owner Darren Nicholson and throttleman Giovanni Carpitella received the Sam Griffith trophy last Saturday during the 2023 UIM Trophy Ceremony and banquet in Monaco. Current UIM president Dr. Raffaele Chiulli, and Powerboat P1 CEO Azam Rangoonwala presented the honor.

“The 222 Offshore crew proved to be the class act in an outstanding series against world class opposition in a season that saw three different race winners with six teams and four manufacturers on the podium,” said Rangoonwala, in a Powerboat P1 press release issued this morning.

Nicholson, who hails from Australia, started offshore powerboat in 2011 with fellow Aussie Peter “Muddy” McGrath, was quick to credit his crew and throttleman for the team’s outstanding performance last year.

“Our team prepared the boat to the level required to compete consistently at every race and  demonstrated outstanding skills and unwavering commitment,” he said during his Saturday acceptance speech. “Giovanni and I are forever indebted—we are the ones accepting the award, but this world championship title belongs to the entire team.”

Powerboat P1 head Azam Rangoonwala and UIM president Dr. Raffaele Chiulli flanked 222 Offshore Australia’s Darren Nicholson and Giovanni Carpitella at last Saturday night’s UIM awards banquet.

For veteran Class 1 competitor Carpitella of Italy, earning the 2023 Class 1 world title completes a long-held goal. “Winning the Class 1 title was a dream from when I was very young watching the racing with my father in the 1980s,” he said. “It was a great season last year.”
