A driving force in the Class 1 offshore racing resurgence since it began in 2019, the 222 Offshore Australia team has officially withdrawn from the American Power Boat Association/Union Internationale Motonautique Offshore World Championships, November 6-13, in Key West, Fla. The team announced its decision to fans through a post on its Instagram page.

“It is with regret that we’re announcing our withdrawal from the upcoming Key West World Championships, which forms race 6, 7 and 8 of the Class 1 World Championship,” the post read. “Darren (Nicholson), our driver and team owner, recently underwent surgery and he has unfortunately experienced complications in the last few days. We can confirm that he is recovering well and he is very much looking forward to getting back in the boat and competing again in 2023.”

The 222 Offshore Australia team took the checkered flag at the most recent Class 1 series contest—the Race World Offshore-produced Clearwater (Fla.) ‘Nationals’—in September. In August, the team also claimed victory at the Great Lakes Grand Prix in Michigan City, Ind.

Reached by phone this morning, P1 Offshore/Powerboat 1 chief executive officer Azam Rangoonwala said, “We were very sad to be informed that 222 has to withdraw from Key West, especially after winning the Class 1 race in Clearwater. We wish Darren a speedy recovery and look forward to having them back racing Class 1 in 2023.”
