Yamaha’s VX Cruiser HO has long provided an impressive list of features at a value-oriented price point. However, for 2024, the buzz centers on the craft’s all-new engine. ^­Yamaha’s naturally aspirated 1.9-liter High Output boasts the largest displacement currently found in the personal watercraft market, along with a midrange-­class-leading 200 hp. Along with a new overlapping impeller design and a redesigned top-loader intake grate, it provided impressive acceleration and top speeds up to 64 mph—not far off the benchmark for many flagship models. Without those flagships’ superchargers, however, the 1.9-liter-equipped VX ­Cruiser won’t share their thirst for fuel; in turn, it provides greater range for long-distance touring. 

As the model name suggests, cruising types will appreciate an abundance of amenities. A 4.3-inch Connext color display with touchpad control allows the operator to keep tabs on speed, fuel levels and engine vitals, and activate a security mode to prevent unauthorized use. The Connext display also includes automated Drive Control features, allowing operators to choose a low, medium or high top-speed setting, as well as a normal or governed acceleration response. Other driver-friendly features include cruise control and a no-wake mode, as well as RiDE, Yamaha’s dual-throttle electronic reverse and deceleration system. It provides intuitive low-speed maneuvering around the dock or launch ramp, as well as rapid slowing at speed.

As to ergonomics, the Cruiser saddle is designed to offer increased comfort for those who like to spend long periods in the saddle. Offering generous support for the driver’s lower back, it’s also tiered theater-style to give each passenger a slightly elevated view over the ­rider in front. Yamaha wisely adds drains to the footwells to keep water from puddling while out on a ride and when the boat is stored outside. Console cup holders keep beverages handy. They also accept ball mounts to add accessories like a GPS or GoPro-style action camera. The watertight glove box includes USB and 12-volt charging ports, and offers LED lighting to see contents more easily. A small underseat storage nook is aft. Forward, a 24-gallon bow compartment includes a molded holder for a take-away cooler.
