Your Guide to the Florida Mangrove Snapper

Your Guide to the Florida Mangrove Snapper

There are many excellent fish in the water around Florida. Mangrove snapper, for example, is one of the best species for anglers of all skill levels.

What is the Mangrove Snapper?

Mangrove snapper, which is also known as the grey snapper, is one of the most popular fish in the state of Florida. It’s a species that can be caught consistently almost all year, and it’s found around inshore waters, creating access for anglers of all kinds.

Ranging in color from bronze to grey, they have a mouth full of sharp teeth and a slender body with a pointed snout.

Mangrove snappers spend most of their life inshore until they reach maturity, at which point they roam into deeper offshore waters. Catchable Florida mangrove snappers are usually 10 to 14 inches in length and weigh about one or two pounds. Offshore, however, they grow much larger, reaching 20 pounds or more.

How to Catch Florida Mangrove Snapper

To catch these fish, you first need to be in the right location. Florida mangrove snapper congregates near structures, especially reefs and wrecks. Inshore mangrove snapper, however, can be found in almost any location that has some decent structure. They get their name because they like to live near shorelines with mangroves as protection and hiding places.

If you are seeking smaller inshore mangrove snappers, you can get by with smaller rods and reels. But if you are pursuing larger offshore snappers, you’ll need something stronger. To catch these fish, you can use artificial lures or live bait. For artificial lures, soft plastics, jerk baits, and shrimp-imitating lures are often effective. Live shrimp, mullet, sardines, and small crabs can be used as live bait to attract Florida mangrove snappers.
