Waves And Wheels Tests New Doug Wright 42 Carbon With New Owners

As if the team at Waves and Wheels in Osage Beach, Mo., isn’t busy enough with winter makeover projects and the Doug Wright Powerboats catamarans it has been turning out and selling for more than a year—including the latest stunning 42-footer that the team just wrapped up—owner Justin Wagner and company are getting ready to take the Waves and Wheels Edition 39 Carbon demo model to the Miami International Boat Show that starts next week.

“We’re so excited to be displaying the 39 Carbon at the Miami show this year; it’s our first time being there and we can’t wait for people to see how our partnership with Doug Wright has progressed,” said Wagner, who confirmed that the boat will be in the water in booth 325 at the Venetian Marina part of the show. “And, after getting a chance to test our latest 42 Carbon Waves and Wheels Edition cat with its new owners last weekend, I’m even more pumped to go to Miami and promote our boats.

“I wish we could have planned to bring the new 42 but we didn’t know if it would be finished in time,” he added. “Plus it’s a customer boat so having people climb all over it at the show would not have been the best idea.”

Surely the new 42 Carbon, which has a Miami Vice style to it and is powered by a pair of Mercury Racing 500R engines, would have been a great fit for the show. Either way, the beautiful boat is bound to get a lot of attention as owners Michael and Jeanise Butterfield of Columbia, Mo., start using it on Lake of the Ozarks once the weather starts to warm up. The new 42-footer is the second one Waves and Wheels has finished—the first was the unique model with the custom motorized windshield built for owner Dave Burgess that was featured in a Speed On The Water YouTube video.

“I’m so pumped about this new 42—it’s such a beautiful boat,” Wagner said. “In my opinion, it doesn’t look like anything else out there. I think the design is off the charts and the owners seem very happy with how everything turned out.

“I have been itching to do an ’80s-inspired boat and fortunately Michael and Jeanise liked the idea and let us run with it,” he continued. “They really trusted us with this project and they were ecstatic when they saw the finished product. Michael said he lost his voice on Saturday because he couldn’t stop talking about the boat all day.”

Michael and Jeanise Butterfield can’t wait to start enjoying their boat, which is powered by twin Mercury Racing 500R engines, on Missouri’s Lake of the Ozarks.

The Butterfields, who also own a twin-outboard-powered pontoon that they’ve used at the lake for several years, are delighted with the 42-footer.

“I’ve been saving up for half my life to buy a boat like this,” Michael Butterfield said and laughed. “I’ve been reading about these boats for years so when the time came to buy one, I started checking out various boats from different dealers and I ended up over at Waves and Wheels. Justin and I talked about what I wanted, what I thought I’d use it for, and he made some recommendations. We ended up choosing the 42 because I wanted the most comfortable boat possible that could satisfy some of my need for speed. We have young kids and I wanted them and the grandparents to be able to join us for the day and not be scared. We all know how rough it can get at the lake, especially on a busy weekend.

“We’re so happy with the boat and how custom everything is, from the interior and the paint to the seating and the stereo,” he added. “It’s a beautiful boat and I swear it came out exactly like the rendering. Once we committed to the boat, Justin took a lot of time with us and heard what we were looking for based on some ideas we had, and we pretty much let him run with it. He came back with a couple of renderings and the first one was perfect. Everyone at Waves and Wheels was easy to work with and they even surprised us with a few things.”

Although he didn’t get much seat time driving the 42 Carbon since it was late on a cold and windy day, Butterfield said it felt incredible.

“We drove the boat around a little bit and did some turns to get a feel for it; and then we took it up to the triple digits briefly, which was cool for my wife because she’s never been that fast in a boat,” Butterfield said. “She told us she never would have guessed we were going that fast. It was pretty cold out so we kept the ride short. It was windy, too, but that was good because we got to experience what it felt like in windy conditions.

“I didn’t expect the boat to be done already, to be honest,” he continued. “We were talking a couple of months ago, and Justin asked me when we wanted it and I said in the spring. Then a month ago he said it’ll be ready around the end of January. I laughed and replied, ‘For what?’ Then I asked him if could put heated seats in it and he told me no problem.”

Butterfield added that he loves the eight-seat configuration in the cockpit and how conveniently placed everything is in the boat.

Wagner said his team continues to look for ways to improve each build and that some of the storage features in the 42 Carbon were new, including dedicated places for every fender and rope, a specific locker for shoes and additional space in the rear storage locker for a 12-volt cooler.

“We’ve always finished out all of the compartments—the stuff nobody sees—with paint, SeaDek and LED lighting, and we keep making little changes in hopes that each Doug Wright we finish is better than the last,” Wagner said. “I’m really big on organization because it makes boating easier when there’s a place for everything.”

He’s also big on sound systems and of course the 42-footer has a “slamming” one featuring top-notch Bluave Marine Audio equipment and complementary LED lighting. He’d be lying though if he didn’t say that his favorite thing about the boat is its performance.

The team at Graphix1 Paint, a division of Waves and Wheels, executed an incredible paintjob on the 42-foot catamaran.

“The boat rides incredible; I mean it’s a Doug Wright, what else can I say?” he stated. “The ride and the handling are off the charts. All I know is that the 42 with the 500R engines, it’s almost like they were built for each other.”

Wagner added that it’s been a lot of fun watching the entire program come to life and that he can’t wait to see what his team does with the next Doug Wright cats coming down the line.

“We have a 36 in progress now and we will have a new 42 here in the next few weeks,” Wagner said. “We’re picking up the pace as we get more boats from Doug Wright. Right now we have three 39s sitting in here, a 42 and a 36. It’s pretty awesome to see how far we’ve come in a fairly short time.”

Happy to answer any questions, Wagner welcomes any phone calls to discuss a new build or a project on an older boat. After all, that’s what Waves and Wheels has always been about—working with its customers to create the boat of their dreams.
