Justin Wagner, the owner of Waves and Wheels in Osage Beach, Mo., is never shy about expressing his emotions when it comes to the Lake of the Ozarks-based marine audio, upholstery and fabrication shop’s projects, especially the ones that are unique or the ones where his talented team really pushes the envelope.

This rendering of a Doug Wright Powerboats 39 Carbon Waves and Wheels edition was released by Justin Wagner earlier this week.

Yet with his latest “project,” Wagner—who has in the past few years purchased and refurbished a marina (The Boardwalk at Waves and Wheels) and opened up a new paint shop (Graphix 1 Paint) with his good friend and Maryland Offshore Performance Marine Center owner Andy Imhof—seems intensely focused and optimistic about the new endeavor.

Earlier this week, I caught up with Wagner to follow up on the story we did at the beginning of September about Waves and Wheels becoming an authorized dealer for Doug Wright Powerboats in Melbourne, Fla., and he expressed his excitement to be picking up the first bare-hull 36-foot catamaran on his return trip from the Florida Powerboat Club Key West Poker Run in a couple of weeks. He’s expecting another 36-footer, which he plans to call the 36 Carbon Waves and Wheels edition in recognition of the boat’s all-carbon-fiber construction, early next year.

“We can’t wait to get our first Doug Wright—we have some cool things in store for our boats, including an all-new wraparound windscreen with extended length to improve vision for the rear-seat passengers,” said Wagner, who recently met with performance boater Jim Lee and his team at Lee Aerospace in Wichita, Kan., to work on some designs. “We really want to add some new-and-improved styling for a true model change for 2023. We have several customers interested in a boat and several who want to see how the first one turns out.”

Along with the crews at Waves and Wheels and Graphix 1 Paint, the talented team at Maryland Offshore Performance Marine Center is going to be assisting Wagner and company—the two businesses often collaborate on both creative and mechanical projects. Most recently, Wagner pointed to Imhof’s expertise in setting up his personal 50-foot Skater Powerboats catamaran named Raiden (read about it here).

“Andy and Mitch (Kramer) are great to work with—I’m not sure I’d want to do this without their support,” Wagner said. “Their knowledge is incredible and their opinions are valuable.”

Wagner said his talented team members are all set to handle interior, paint and rigging for the two 36 Carbon cats they have on order as well as the 39- and 42-foot cats that are next in line to get the Waves and Wheels treatment. Those models, according to Wagner, are going to be called the 39 Carbon and 42 Carbon.

He added that although paint and interior designs have been determined for the first 36-foot cat, there is still time to customize the design if a customer acts soon enough.

“We will have a few models on the water by next summer,” Wagner stated. “All of the boats are going to be tailored to a customer’s tastes…assuming they’re purchased in time to affect the boat’s overall look and feel.”

Wagner, who also owns Bluave Marine Audio and was featured in a Speed On The Water In The Lead episode in 2021 (below), said anyone interested in purchasing a Doug Wright can reach him at 573-216-2179 or Andy Imhof at 571-623-2778 for more information.
