Third-Year Dam Boat Run At Lake Murray Set Up For Success

Heading into its third year, the Dam Boat Run at Lake Murray in South Carolina will complete a trifecta of consecutive June-weekend events in the Carolinas that includes the Hartwell Lake Charity Fun Run and Binks Fun Run For Addiction Awareness, both of which are in North Carolina. The Lake Murray happening is set for June 19-21 and will raise money for several local charities.

A healthy mix of local and out-of-state boats already are registered for the June 19-21 event. Photos by John Boozer copyright No Limits Photography LLC.
Last year’s Dam Boat Run attracted 82 registered boats. The event will be based again out of Lake Murray Marina and the newly renovated Liberty On The Lake Taproom and Grill. Interstate Batteries is returning as the presenting sponsor.
“We opened registration in mid-February and are tracking to sell out,” said Bret Laso, the driving force behind the event. “We’ve got participants registered from as far away as California, Texas, New York and Florida.
“We had exponential growth in our first two years and are looking to have an epic event this year,” he added.

Lake Murray Marina will once again be the run’s home-base.
Among the Floridians planning to participate is John Cosker, the founder and owner of DeLand-based Mystic Powerboats.
“John wants to see what our lake is about,” said Laso, who owns a Mystic C4000 catamaran. “For some reason, we have an unusually large number of Mystics that call Lake Murray home.”
For the fundraising side of the event, Laso has set a $75,000 goal. Beneficiaries include the Big Red Barn Retreat, a nonprofit organization serving veterans and first-responders, the Richland County Sheriff Department and Camp Discovery, an outfit that provides science-based learning and activity programs for children.

The Dam Boat Run attracts plenty of impressive hardware such as this 50-foot Outerlimits V-bottom owned by South Carolina’s Brian Forehand.
The fun begins Thursday evening with a meet-and-great pool party sponsored by Palmetto Amusements. Friday’s action includes a casual fun run and a raft-up. A raft-up, drag-boat races, a bikini contest and an awards celebration with a silent auction will follow Saturday’s main event on the water.
Said Laso, “We really want to grow the run and ensure all participants have a great weekend while we come together to support our community.”
