Super Stock Class Alabama Bound With 13 Teams

Thanks to 13 Super Stock-class offshore racing teams, hydroplane racing fans headed to this weekend’s Lake Guntersville Hydrofest in Alabama may spy something unusual—at least for a hydro event—on the road during their travels. In a first for the class and the event, the Super Stock teams will compete on Saturday and Sunday between the multiple-class hydroplane races.

Most of those teams depart today for the venue.

The father-and-son cockpit duo of Mike and John Demeno will compete together for the first time in the new boat this weekend in Guntersville.

The Guntersville event has been on the 2025 Super Stock owners competition schedule since the group released it in December 2024. Invited and financially enticed by the Guntersville organizers with a $25,000 show-up offer, the group voted to include it on this season’s roster.

“Each team will get $1,000,” Ryan Beckley, the Super Stock owners group representative, explained. “The rest will go into a purse for the races.

“It wasn’t just the money,” he continued. “We liked the idea of a new site and not playing ‘second fiddle’ to any other offshore racing class. They came to us. We voted on it and decided to try something new.”

A new Super Stock team from Long Island, N.Y., also will debut at the unusual venue. Running a 32-foot Doug Wright catamaran and dubbed Speedmaster Performance Marine, the father-and-son cockpit duo of Mike and John Demeno will compete together for the first time in the new boat in Guntersville.

“We just had it wrapped yesterday,” said John Demeno, who will drive the cat. “It’s leaving tonight to head down there.”

For the Super Stock class, Lake Guntersville Hydrofest is the second event of the 2025 reason. A dozen teams in the category competed last month at the season-opening Thunder On Cocoa Beach event on the Central Florida Coast.

Though the event’s livestream will carry hydroplane action, Beckley was unsure if Super Stock racing would be included when this story went live.
