Spotlight On Jay Muller—The Triple-Threat Throttleman

Despite that his birth certificate puts him at 53 years old, New Jersey-based offshore racing throttleman Jay Muller never seems to age. Some of it could be the occasional bleach-blonde takeover—all natural, of course—of his thick head of hair. Some of it is just plain old good genetics.
But most of it is attitude and energy level. The guy is forever young
Such qualities come in handy for anyone who shares the cockpit with an equally energetic character named Billy Mauff, the owner and driver of the Super Cat-class WHM Motorsports team. Muller and Mauff have been teammates in the Super Cat ranks for more than two decades.

And still, Muller remains miraculously ageless.
This season, he’s going to need every bit of his youthful spirit and energy as he’s throttling for three teams—WHM in the Pro Class 1 ranks, CELSIUS in the Super Stock class, most recently added, the Super Cat-class Graydel outfit—this season. But at least Muller knows what he’s getting into. He’s pulled triple-duty a few times in his career, through never for an entire season.

Offshore racing fans learned this weekend that Muller will throttle for the Super Cat-class Graydel team starting with the season-opener next month in Cocoa Beach, Fla. Photo by Pete Boden copyright Shoot 2 Thrill Pix.
“It is a lot of work, but they are three premiere teams so it’s exciting,” Muller, a multi-time, multi-class world champion, explained. “Plus, for some events CELSIUS races on Saturday. And there are a few races such as Chicago and Clearwater where the Super Stock class isn’t going to compete.”
Another throttleman who has pulled triple duty on more than one occasion, John Tomlinson described the racing part of the three-team commitment as “no problem.” It’s the preparation and testing work, especially on race weekends, that’s challenging, he said.
“I did Cocoa Beach last year in the 450R Factory Stock class, M CON Monster Energy in Super Cat and Morpheus in Class 1,” Tomlinson recalled. “We won in 450R and Super Cat and finished second in Class 1. Coordinating for adequate testing on Saturday and setting up all three boats set up was the difficult part.”

Muller will once again join owner/driver Chris Hopgood in the Super Stock-class CELSIUS raceboat.
Until this morning, Tomlinson didn’t know that Muller had joined the Graydel team. Informed of the development, he chuckled.
“He’s going to be busy,” he said.
But then, Jay Muller isn’t your average Garden State variety super hero. The guy simply doesn’t age.
