Sails should be serviced

Sail servicing avoids nasty surprises at the start of the season

Falmouth-based Penrose Sails provides winter servicing for sails and boat covers which includes inspection, repair and storage.

Gavin Watson, partner at Penrose Sails explains: “One of the worst things for yacht sails is to leave them in place when your boat is ashore for the winter. As part of our valeting service we carefully carry out basic repairs and if we find any larger issues, we’ll get in touch and discuss options for repair or replacement which will avoid any nasty surprises at the start of the next season.”

Once any repairs are complete, Penrose Sails’ valeting service includes removal of dirt and salt and cover reproofing if required. “The whole servicing process goes a long way towards increasing the longevity of sails and covers, reducing the chance of future failures and ensuring there is no delay to getting back out on the water,” added Gavin.

Properly designed and fitted winter covers will also add years to the life of an open or wooden decked boat. Penrose Sails designs and build all types of yacht covers, including sprayhoods, canopies and sail covers for vessels ranging from dinghies to superyachts.
