Rookie Racer Sees Early Success—For All The Right Reasons

Minnesota’s Jeremy Tschida isn’t the first offshore racer to come out of the high-performance pleasure-boating world, but the Super Stock-class rookie-driver is as qualified as newbies get. He’s own and operated go-fast pleasure catamarans for years. Dubbed Topless and Topless II, his most recent rides are 46- and 37-foot open-cockpit cats from Outerlimits Offshore Powerboats in Bristol, R.I.

Offshore racing is a family affair for Tschida, his wife, Kristie, and their 17-year-old son, Tyler, who thanks to his encyclopedic performance-boating knowledge and equally good nature is as well-known and liked as his father. The senior Tschida shares the cockpit with veteran throttleman Julian Maldonado of Manatee Marine Unlimited, a Palmetto, Fla., Valor catamaran and H-Craft center-console dealership and service he co-owns with Sara Langheim.

“I’m excited to get Tyler involved and on the team radio because he loves any kind of racing, but especially powerboat racing,” Tschida explained. “He has wanted to be involved for years. He could be a commentator on the livestream—he knows more about the sport and drivers and throttlemen than I do most of the time. So this is his shot to see how it works.”

The answer so far? Pretty damn well. Running a 31-foot Fazza catamaran dubbed Wozencraft Insurance, the team has earned a pair of second-place finishes at the first two events, Thunder On Cocoa Beach and Lake Guntersville Hydrofest, of the Super Stock-class season.

“We’re getting better and better every time we go,” he said. “Our communication coming into the corners is improving and it needed to. We are making headway. We’ve been able to do a lot of testing.

“We even tested after yesterday’s storm to see if we could fine a few more miles per hour,” he added. “Manatee Marine is kicking ass for this team, and we love Wozencraft’s support.”

Tschida paused to laugh, then continued. “And Tyler is in heaven,” he said.
