Peppers Racing/JBS Racing Team Outboard Engines Recovered

Though Louisiana’s Lake Pontchartrain has a maximum depth of 65 feet, most of the famed New Orleans area water is 12 to 14 deep. That made recovering the twin Mercury Racing 500R outboard engines powering the Factory Stock-class Peppers Racing/JBS Racing team following a blow-over in its 36-foot Skater catamaran during the inaugural New Orleans Grand Prix a relatively sure thing.

With help from local law enforcement officers, the team located the supercharged V-8 engines on the lake bottom Monday. Now the outboards are with Ted McIntyre, II, of Marine Turbine Technologies in Franklin, La.
“Ted pickled them for us,” said Micheal Stancombe, who co-owns the team and shares the cockpit with his father, George.
Before the outboard can be reinstalled on the Skater’s transom, the catamaran needs to go back to the Douglas, Mich.-headquartered company for repairs.

The engines were located on Monday.
“The boats has damage from the stupid Italians, but it wasn’t really hurt in the blow-over,” Stancombe explained. “It will head back to Skater this week for hullside patches and a new lifting eye. The engines will go to Innovation Marine in Sarasota on Tuesday and we’re praying it’s all good.”
The Stancombes plan to return to the racecourse for the Midwest Challenge set for August 1-3 in Sheboygan, Wis. Like the New Orleans Grand Prix, the third-year Powerboat P1 event is part of the Monster Energy Triple Crown offshore racing series.
“We will be back,” Stancombe said, then laughed. “The podium is awaiting our return.”

Currently being pickled at Marine Turbine Technologies, the engines will be inspected at Innovation Marine before being reinstalled on the catamaran.
