Owen Buis To Join The Double-Duty Club At Ozarks Races

At 16 years old, offshore racer Owen Buis is among the youngest competitors in the sport. Buis spent the past two seasons learning the throttleman position in the Bracket 700 class, and he’s thrived in that role. Along with his fellow XINSURANCE-backed Bracket-class teammate/driver Cameron Turk, he’s already made it into the American Powerboat Association Hall of Champions.

Now Buis is on threshold of earning another distinction—throttling raceboats in two classes on the same weekend at the upcoming XINSURANCE Offshore event at the Lake of the Ozarks. The young throttleman will join the Cat 300 ranks under the Utah-based specialty insurer’s sponsorship blanket.

Buis tested and new driver Chris Capote tested the single Bracket 700-class boat on the waterway today. More test sessions are part of the team’s plans this week.

Buis also will test with Turk in the single Mercury Racing 300R engine-powered Cat 300-class canopied raceboat before the weekend.

“It’s going to be a lot,” he said, then laughed. “I have two races in the cat and one in the V-bottom.

“I have to start showing Chris the ropes today,” he added before heading out in Bracket boat this afternoon. “It’s his first time in the boat.”

Starting with the XINSURANCE Offshore event Owen Buis and Cameron Turk will campaign the Cat 300 raceboat this season.

Buis may not be the youngest throttleman to pull double-duty in Bracket class and Spec class boats—records of such things are haphazardly kept—but he certainly is among the youngest of them. Regardless, the upcoming accomplishment is enough to impress another APBA Hall of Champions member, his father Nick Buis.

“He’s eating up offshore racing,” said the senior Buis, who is the throttlemen for the Pro Class 1 XINSURANCE and shares the cockpit of the MTI raceboat and a Mod-V class raceboat with J.J. Turk, Cameron Turk’s father.

“I’ve been telling him he needs to make a wooden sign-post, like one of those you find in a tiki bar, with individual wooden plaques on where he’s raced and their distances from our home in Southwest Florida.”
