New Products: Outerlimits Completes Unique SL 44 For West Coast Client

Though no two V-bottoms or catamarans from Outerlimits Offshore Powerboats are identical, some are bit more different than others. That’s just the nature of products created by high-end custom boat-builders.

And some, such as the new SL 44 sportboat headed to J.P. Toneman of Southern California, are downright unique.

Heading out West to performance-boat enthusiast J.P. Toneman, this Outerlimits SL 44 is truly one of a kind.

The owner of a large concrete company servicing the entire Golden State, Toneman wanted a full-wraparound windshield on his 44-footer as well as a capped hull and deck, meaning no rub rail. Both are “firsts” for an SL 44, according to the Bristol, R.I., company’s Dan Kleitz.

“The windshield, which we had Lee Aerospace custom-produce, is like something you’d see on an SV 43,” he explained. “And we fared and finished the boat’s sheer-line instead of installing a rub rail you’d typically see on an SL 44.

“It’s also the first SL 44 to have an angled bustle on the back, and the first one to have Lamborghini-style louvers instead of a sunpad,” he continued. “To make the boat more lake-friendly, we created larger steps on the rear swim platform. And because a lot of people out West tend to beach their boats nose in, we created a custom boarding ladder that clips onto the bow with pin cleats for boarding and debarking.”

In another first for Outerlimits, the Stephen Miles Design-painted boat is leaving Rhode Island this Friday on a custom-built Evolution trailer.

“Ryan Schwarzen of nearby Kutting Edge Interiors did an amazing job with the cockpit interior, which is a blend of Alcantara and Ultra Leather, and the cabin came out really nice and crisp as well,” said Kleitz.

Powered by a pair of Mercury Racing 1100 engines with No. 6 drives, the 44-footer reached 133 mph in its first test session yesterday with Kleitz and Toneman aboard.

“I was really impressed,” said Toneman. “The boat weighs 11,160 pounds.Among the many reasons I bought it is because of the high-performance hulls (Outerlimits founder) Mike Fiore built.”

Toneman, who has a second home in Boulder City, Nev., said he plans to run boat on Lake Mead and Lake Mohave. In August, he’ll bring it to Discovery Bay, Calif., for the annual Big Cat Poker Run on San Joaquin/Sacramento River Delta.

“It’s a wild piece,” he said. “The last time anyone brought a new Outerlimits to the West Coast was in 2014 when Mike Nixon, a good friend of mine, did it. This boat is going to be a big deal for Outerlimits.”
