NPFL Launches Chad Poteat ALS Fundraiser Tournament on Cherokee Lake
WILKESVILLE, Ohio — ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is a rare and fatal neurodegenerative disease known for progressively robbing individuals of muscle function. Often referred to as “Lou Gehrig’s disease,” it has affected notable figures like baseball legend Lou Gehrig and physicist Stephen Hawking. Now, the disease has hit closer to home for the National Professional Fishing League (NPFL), as professional angler Chad Poteat of Mount Airy, North Carolina has been diagnosed with ALS.
“Our hearts go out to Chad and his family,” said NPFL President Brad Fuller. “He’s been a member of the NPFL family since joining the league in 2024, and we want to support him in any way we can. That starts with a fundraising event. All proceeds will go to Chad and his family as they battle ALS.”
Cherokee Lake Tournament Set for May 21
The Chad Poteat ALS Fundraiser Tournament will bring together NPFL anglers and donor co-anglers for a special charity event on Wednesday, May 21 at Cherokee Lake in Jefferson City, Tennessee. The tournament will launch from the Cherokee Dam boat ramp on Renfro Road.
Participants will be randomly paired in teams of two co-anglers with an NPFL professional angler, forming a three-person boat team. The format will follow a three-bass limit for scoring.
Registration and Participation Details
To join the event, a $200 donation per co-angler pair is required. All funds go directly to the Poteat family to help with medical expenses and care. Entry is limited, with dozens of NPFL pros donating their time and resources to make the event possible.
Interested participants should register online and be ready to meet their pro angler by 7:00 a.m. ET at the launch site. The official tournament runs from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon ET.
Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams based on total weight. Co-anglers must bring their own fishing gear and personal flotation devices, and standard NPFL tournament rules apply.
