New SC 37 Catamaran To Be Part Of Outerlimits Trifecta For Indiana Couple
Earlier this week, Outerlimits Offshore Powerboats married the hull and deck of an SC 37 catamaran No. 8 at its facility in Bristol, R.I. The Mercury Racing 450R outboard-engine-powered 37-footer has been a strong seller since the first one was delivered just 15 months ago to its Connecticut-based owner. Though it took a bit longer than anyone involved expected, the company now has a strong foothold in the still-hot outboard catamaran market.
With its customer-specific signature green hull, Outerlimits SC 37 catamaran No. 8 is going to Donnie and Cara MacLeod of Indiana.
But for Donnie and Cara MacLeod of Evansville, Ind., the 37-footer will be the latest addition to their growing Outerlimits collection. The couple currently owns Teams Gotta Go IV, an SL 50X V-bottom delivered to original owner Dave Scotto in 2019 and powered by dual-calibration Mercury Racing 1550/1350 engines, and has ordered an SC 46 catamaran, which is at least a year-and-a-half away from completion
“Though it is listed for sale, we’ll probably keep the V-bottom until the SC 46 cat is finished,” Donnie MacLeod said, then chuckled. “One of the things I like about that boat is that when we’re running with friends in other boats we can say, ‘Let’s just leave them behind’—and we’re gone.”
As he did for Team Gotta Go IV and will for the MacLeod’s SC 46 catamaran, Stephen Miles will handle the paintjob design and execution for the 37-footer.
Kentucky-based painter Stephen Miles of Stephen Miles Design has been an intersection of sorts for the couple when it comes the Outerlimits brand. Miles painted Team Gotta Go IV for Scotto when it was new and steered the MacLeods toward the 50-footer when the Canada-based owner listed it for sale. While one of the big V-bottoms engines was being replaced, Donnie MacLeod bought a pre-owned MTI 340X catamaran, which he eventually sold to Miles.
But the hook was set.
“These outboard cats are like little Formula 1 cars,” he said. “They turn on a dime and they’re fun to drive. It’s a different kind of boating, for sure, than what we do in the V-bottom and I really that, too.
“Cara likes the cabin in the big boat,” he continued. “But she liked the cat better around the docks because it was easier for just two of us to handle.”
Ryan Schwarzen of Rhode Island-based Kutting Edge is handling the catamaran’s interior.
Like the V-bottom, each catamaran will boast a green hull. Miles will handle the overall color-scheme design and application.
The MacLeod’s 37-footer is slated for completion in early 2023.
“The only thing that could slow us down is the paint,” said MacLeod, taking a good-natured jab at his boat-painter friend, who organizes the annual Kuttawa Cannonball Run with Jeff Hoefling and Terry Martin. “But I know for sure it will be ready in time for Kuttawa in June.”
