A long way from his South Florida home, Bob Crow of Nor-Tech dealer SoFlo Boats delivered the first 500 Sport center console powered by 600-hp Mercury Marine Verado V-8 outboard engines to a client in Northeast. The four-outboard propulsion package proved ideal, according to the longtime Nor-Tech man, for the 52-footer, which weighs in at more than 30,000 pounds.

The first Nor-Tech to be powered by Mercury Marine 600 Verado outboard engines, the 500 Sport center console topped out at 75 mph during a recebt seal-trial/delivery.

Though Crow said he expected the outboards to be a solid match for the new center console, he was pleasantly surprised how sporty and nimble it was with what are the most powerful outboards in the Mercury Marine line-up.

“It’s a massive boat with a Seakeeper system, generators, air-conditioning, a massive hardtop and more,” he said. “It’s perfectly balanced with those outboards—it rides level and doesn’t dip in the stern—and because the engines have so much torque combined with duo-prop lower units it comes on plane very flat and level. Hole-shot was impressive.

“And as big as it is, it’s very predictable, stable and nimble in turns,” he added. “I was quite impressed. It has a nice, tight feel.”

The boat reportedly topped out at 75 mph, which also impressed Crow, who described the center console as “very custom” with details that included matching the simulated grout in the Perma-Teak flooring on the cockpit sole to match the boat’s rich blue exterior. The aforementioned hardtop covers both rows of bolsters so all passengers in those coveted seats have shade.

Still, the 52-footer’s overall performance was what most dazzled the veteran SoFlo salesman.

“It also behaved really well in open-ocean conditions in quartering, following and head-on seas,” he continued. “That’s a really big one, right there—it’s a good offshore boat.”

Said Crow of the 52-footer, “It’s perfectly balanced with those outboards.”
