Massachusetts Offers Free Learn-to-Fish Events

Spring is in full swing, and there’s no better time to introduce yourself or your family to the joys of fishing. MassWildlife’s Angler Education Program offers a series of free, family-friendly “Learn to Fish” events across the Commonwealth. These sessions are designed for beginners of all ages, providing hands-on instruction in rod setup, knot tying, casting techniques, and fish identification.

What to Expect:

  • No fishing license required for participants.
  • All skill levels welcome, from novices to those looking to refresh their skills.
  • Equipment and bait provided, though attendees are encouraged to bring their own gear if they have it.
  • Instruction by experienced anglers, ensuring a supportive and informative environment.

May 8, 4–6 p.m. Fort Meadow Pond, Hudson Pre-registration required. In cooperation with Hudson Recreation Department.
May 10, 9 a.m.–12 p.m. Dufresne Pond, Granby Cops and Bobbers Family Fishing Festival (ages 14 and under). Pre-registration suggested. In cooperation with Amherst and Granby Police/Fire, USFWS, and Pioneer Valley TU.
May 12, 5–8 p.m. Bass Pro Shops, Foxborough Fly Fishing 101 class. Pre-registration required.
May 13, 5:30–7:30 p.m. Jordan Pond, Shrewsbury Pre-registration required. In cooperation with Shrewsbury Recreation Department.
May 14, 5:30–7:30 p.m. Camp Sewataro Pond, Sudbury Pre-registration required. In cooperation with Lincoln-Sudbury Adult & Community Ed.
May 15, 4:30–6:30 p.m. Bolivar Pond, Canton Pre-registration required. In cooperation with Canton Recreation Department.
May 17, 10 a.m.–2 p.m. Marlboro Fish & Game Club, Marlborough Veterans & Families Day. No registration required.
May 17, 9 a.m.–12 p.m. Spec Pond, Wilbraham Family Fishing Derby. No registration required. In cooperation with Wilbraham Parks and Westfield Bank.
May 20, 5–7 p.m. New Pond, Easton Pre-registration required. In cooperation with Easton Recreation Department.
May 21, 5–7 p.m. Nuttings Lake, Billerica Pre-registration required. In cooperation with Billerica Recreation Department.
May 22, 4:30–6:30 p.m. Choate Park Pond, Medway Pre-registration required. In cooperation with Medway Parks and Recreation.
May 27, 5–7 p.m. Sandra Pond, Westborough Pre-registration required. In cooperation with Northborough & Westborough Recreation.
