More than 70 competitors have signed up so far for the 36th annual Lake of the Ozarks Shootout next weekend—August 27-28—in Central Missouri. By way of comparison, 13 racers had pre-registered for the top-speed contest on the third-quarter-mile course at this time last year. Driven by first-year executive director Leah Martin, a Shootout volunteer for the past 12 years, the efficiency of online registration certainly has contributed to the record-setting number and pace of early sign-ups. But in every aspect of this year’s event is booming.

“It’s just a bigger year in general,” said Martin.

A longtime supporter of the happening at the sponsorship and organizational levels, Mark Maasen of Lake of the Ozarks-based Poly-Lift Boat Lifts agreed.

“It’s going to be an epic year for the Shootout and its charities,” he said.

Just three days before the first boat runs down the three-quarter-mile top-sped course at Mile Marker 34-1/2 outside the cove at Captain Ron’s Bar and Grill—the host venue for the event—there is the Wednesday evening Shootout On The Strip Street Party. Last year’s Waves And Wheels-backed, mile-long exhibit and celebration on Bagnell Dam attracted 81 boats.

So far, 100 boats have been registered for this year’s Shootout On The Strip—and there are still five spots remaining for would-be powerboat displays.

There are still five spots open for powerboat displays at this year’s Shootout On the Strip, which is set for Wednesday, August 24, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Photo by Pete Boden copyright Shoot 2 Thrill Pix.

“We are going to use the parking across from the Neon Taco restaurant for display space,” said Martin. “We had a waiting list, but we cleaned it up yesterday and still have space for five more boats.”

Boat companies and individual boat owners interested in displaying at the Wednesday night event should contact Leah Martin via email, . [email protected].
