Lake Cumberland Thunder Run Organizers Adding Value

With current registration at almost 60 boats and signs-up still open for three weeks, the 17th annual Lake Cumberland Thunder Run set for June 27-28 is already on track for a solid turnout. As previously reported, organizers Justin Lucas and Dan and Julie Weiss pushed back the Kentucky event’s dates this year in the hope of better water conditions, meaning less rain-driven forest-floor debris in the lake.

‘I think moving the dates has helped,” Julie Weiss said. “People have been asking for this for a long time—ourselves included. So we are happy to have finally been able to push it back to have more time for the lake to clear up.”

Such things ultimately are out of their hands, but what the organizers know they can control is bring more value to the event by adding new benefits and features. And that is exactly what they’ve been doing.

First off, participants will have more opportunity to get captured by photographer Pete Boden during Saturday’s main event.

“We will be adding more helicopter-photography time after the lunch stop,” Lucas said. “That should help those participants who may not have been photographed during the run to the first card-stop.”

Another value add? Lunch at Marina Rowena on Friday is included in this year’s registration fee. Participants in the Friday run will receive their “bonus chip” at the marina rather than during the following raft-up.

The organizers also have made a few moves to help inspired participants to make it to Saturday’s floating card-stop at 76 Falls, which is sponsored this year by Jason Roberts Painting and Remodeling.

As if the 76 Falls card-stop weren’t cool enough in and of itself, the organizers have added a few fun details to it.

“As in previous years, the chips will be handed off a houseboat, but this year the 75 Falls stop will have a Mardi Gras theme,” Lucas explained. “And in addition to your poker chip there will be five Golden Mardi Gras King Cake Babies handed out randomly. They will be worth extra hands and extra cards

“In addition to other giveaway items, it should be a very fun stop this year,” he added.
