During the 2021 Florida Powerboat Club Miami Boat Show Poker Run and Exhibit at Gilbert’s Resort in Key Largo, Fla., Missouri performance boater Scott Kottman got the chance to take a ride in an MTI 390X catamaran with none other than Randy Scism, the founder and owner of Marine Technology Inc., in Wentzville, Mo.

Kottman, who is an agent for Wozencraft Insurance, was considering repowering his 1998 36-foot Skater Powerboats catamaran that he had updated already in various stages, but he quickly changed his mind after experiencing the 39-foot cat powered by a pair of Mercury Racing 450R engines.

“The week after I got home from Miami, I went to MTI and put a deposit on one,” said Kottman, who took delivery of his new pearl-white 390X with twin 450-hp outboard engines last Friday, just in time for Memorial Day weekend on his home away from home—Central Missouri’s Lake of the Ozarks. “The entire experience from start to finish with MTI was awesome. Everyone there was so easy to deal with. Honestly, I think trying to figure out the design was the most stressful part about the process. Fortunately Wes (Jones, MTI’s designer) was as patient as can be while we tried different concepts for several hours one day. We ended up going with the pearl white with black accents, and the team at MTI seemed to love it.

“The boat turned out so awesome,” Kottman continued, adding that he can’t wait to spend more time running it with his wife, Jenna, and their six-month-old son, Waylon. “It is so easy to drive. I mean it’s much lighter than my Skater and it handles better than my Skater did. I was very impressed with how well it did on Lake of the Ozarks on Saturday. The thing just starts packing air and cruises over everything.”

Kottmann was sure to thank Tom Stuart, MTI’s sales manager (pictured above, at left, with Kottmann), and Scott Blessing, MTI’s catamaran department rigging manager (pictured below, at left, with Kottmann), for their time during the build process and with the delivery.

“Those guys were so great to work with,” Kottmann said. “I’m excited to do some more boating with them and the rest of the MTI crew.”

Kottmann, who is already registered for the 2023 MTI Owners Fun Run in the Florida Keys, said he plans to take his MTI to next month’s Boyne Thunder Poker Run in Northern Michigan. He also has several Lake of the Ozarks-specific events on the calendar including the Big Thunder Marine-backed Support Our Troops Fun Run and the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout. He’s actually doing tomorrow’s Run What Ya Brung Poker Run, which is the Shootout’s first event of the season ahead of Saturday’s Lake Race festivities.

In the fall/winter, he’s likely to take the boat to Florida to participate in some of the Florida Powerboat Club and Fort Myers Offshore events.

“It was great to get Scott his boat just in time for Memorial Day,” Stuart said. “He’s going to love the boat. Heck, I love the boat—I like how clean it is.”
