Hot Weather and Intense Competition Define Day Two on the Delta
OAKLEY, Calif. – Another day of 100-plus degree air temps met the 139 pro and co-anglers battling for the BAM Champion title on the California Delta. By Day Two’s top-10 field cut, Ish Monroe of Oakdale, Calif., added a limit of 17.67 pounds to his Day One 21.64 to take the lead going into Championship Sunday at the final stop of the West Division’s Pro/Am presented by Tackle Warehouse and the City of Oakley.
Monroe’s Local Knowledge and Grass Game Pay Off
Monroe’s two-day total of 39.31 pounds gives the Delta local a narrow advantage heading into the final day of competition, with little more than a pound separating him from his closest challenger.
Although he shared his fish were coming from 1 to 4 feet of water, Monroe stayed tight-lipped about his exact bait selection. He described the California Delta as being in a “pick your poison” phase.
“There is a topwater bite, a flippin’ bite, a ChatterBait bite – my co-angler caught ‘em on a dropshot,” he said. “You can probably catch ‘em on whatever you want.”
Diverse Cover and Tidal Clarity Play a Role
Monroe’s primary area includes a mix of vegetation, rock, and wood, with changing water clarity based on tidal movement.
“It’s dirty in the morning and cleans up in the afternoon when the tide changes and filters it through the grass,” he noted. “There is every type of grass you can think of – hydrilla, pennywort, hyacinth, alligator grass, snot weed – you name it, the grass is there.”
Dependable Equipment Key for Long Delta Runs
Covering water is crucial to Monroe’s approach. He credits his Lowrance Ghost trolling motor powered by RELiON batteries for staying in the game all day. For the long Delta runs, his Yamaha outboard and Skeeter boat offer the performance and reliability he depends on.
“It’s the Delta, you need reliability and with this long run, you need to be fast,” he said. “My Skeeter is fast. I passed up multiple guys today.”
Monroe plans to stay committed to his primary area on Championship Sunday.
Shane Martin Eyes Co-Angler Victory with Big Lead
On the co-angler side, Shane Martin of Disco Bay, Calif., continues to dominate. With a two-day total of 29.52 pounds, Martin extended his lead to nearly six pounds after adding a Day Two limit of 12.58 to his Day One bag of 16.94, which included a 7.12-pound big bass.
Martin will be paired with pro leader Ish Monroe for the final day of competition.
