Inside The SOTW Mag 2022 Interview Issue—Mark And Britney Godsey

Chances are good that if Mark and Britney Godsey aren’t working at Hixson, Tenn.-based Gold Bond, Inc., a top-40 supplier of promotional products for more than 75 years, you’ll find them on the water—and not just the liquid kind. In addition to being avid wake-surfers, they’re devoted snowboarders. Snow is, after all, just frozen water.

Whether running the MTI 390X catamaran, wake-surfing or snowboarding, Tennessee’s Mark and Britney devote most of their leisure time to fun on the water. Photo by Pete Boden copyright Shoot 2 Thrill Pix.

The exception to this? More and more nowadays, you can find the Chattanooga, Tenn., couple in the air. Mark Godsey is a private pilot who recently earned his instrument rating and Britney is his most-frequent co-pilot in a Cirrus plane he shares with his father, Don, who’s also a pilot.

Aviation is in the Godsey family blood—Mark’s grandfather, Willard, also was a pilot. But neither family patriarch had a passion for performance boating, much less the commitment to it that Mark and Britney Godsey share. They had just started dating when Mark purchased his first MTI, a rare 38-foot catamaran called Project Mayhem. Two years later, they were married and became familiar faces at poker runs around the country.

In 2019, they purchased a canopied MTI—the former Pass Blocker cat owned by retired NFL defenseman Brad Benson of the New York Giants— powered by Mercury Racing 1550/1350 engines. Much as they enjoyed the 52-footer, it was a whole lot of boat for two people to handle.

So last year they made another move and purchased an MTI 390X with twin Mercury Racing 450R outboards. But they couldn’t agree on colors so they split it down the middle, so to speak, with help Stephen Miles Design in Kentucky.

As in all sustainable relationships, a little compromise and a lot of teamwork go a long way.
