Returning houseboat-style to Kuttawa Harbor Marina from Prizer Point Marina on the shores of Kentucky’s Lake Barkley—the Friday lunch destination for the two-day Kuttawa Cannonball Run—I asked my host Stephen Miles how many boats were registered for the sixth annual gathering on Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake. The founder of Stephen Miles Design in Owensboro, Ky., he helped launched the event and is one of its biggest boosters.

For all the right reasons, the sixth annual Kuttawa Cannonball Run was arguably the best one yet. Photo by Pete Boden copyright Shoot 2 Thrill Pix.

So I figured he’d have a clue. I was wrong.

“Bro, I have no idea,” he said, then cackled. “I don’t actually do anything to organize this. Jeff and Terry do all the work.”

Vintage Miles—deflect, defer, self-deprecate and avoid taking credit at all costs. So I put

the same question to his fellow organizers Jeff Hoefling and Terry Martin the next day during lunch at Breakers Marina, 60 miles from Kuttawa Harbor, in Tennessee.

“We don’t have a final count yet, but I think we were at 130 registered boats yesterday,” Martin said.

Hoefling agreed.

“Yeah, 130 boats yesterday but people were still registering this morning so we probably have between 130 and 140 boats,” he said.

Either number left the event well short of the 180-boat record it set last year. But the group didn’t feel smaller. Nothing about the event felt smaller.

Among the hardware in the mix was Burton and Yvette Kirsten’s brilliant Outerlimits Offshore Powerboats 46-foot catamaran called Jet, a slew of radical V-bottoms, including a massive (and impressively fast) 52-foot Nor-Tech, an array of center consoles from Sunsation Powerboats, MTI, Deep Impact, Midnight Express and more, plus a small army of outboard- powered sport catamarans.

And of course there was a thundering herd of well-kept Fountain Powerboats, Donzi Marine, Baja Marine and Sunsation sportboats from the past few decades.
