Image Of The Week:  Dude, It’s A Skater Part II—The T-Shirt

You know you’ve made the go-fast-boating-writer big-time when one of your headlines lands on a T-shirt created by Skater Powerboats catamaran fans. I mean, those people are rabid. They don’t mess around. They put the fan in fanatic. They’re a little scary that way.

Here’s how it happened.

A picture worth at least four words.

Last week, I wrote a lighthearted column on the structural resiliency of a Skater catamaran. The piece was inspired by a conversation I had with the Douglas, Mich., company’s Tony Cutsuries after a Skater 388 went aerobatic and landed minus the requisite gear during the traditional top-speed shootout at the Desert Storm Poker Run in Lake Havasu City, Ariz.

I assumed the smashed-up cat was headed for a landfill and I told Cutsuries so.

“Dude, it’s a Skater,” he responded, meaning the boat was repairable. His quote was an instant—and easy—choice for the story headline.

In turn, the column led a group of brand-fanatics including devout Skater-man Sam Jirik and his friends Craig and Patti Mears to take their passion to the next level at the Tickfaw 200 Poker Run in Springfield, La., last weekend. The group donned custom-made black T-shirts with white lettering and struck a pose for a photograph outside the Mears’ home.

What’s next? How about, “Dude, It’s A Skater” hats?

No royalties required, of course. I don’t mess with Skater fans.
