How to Rig Ballyhoo

Ballyhoo are the bread and butter of just about every offshore angler. Most big game species including tuna, dolphin, wahoo, sailfish and Marlin will eat it, and they can be rigged a number of different ways. We stopped by West Marine to grab some gear to show you one of the easiest and fastest ways to rig ballyhoo that is guaranteed to shorten your bait prep time and increase your fishing time considerably. Be sure to have these handy:

  • Crimping pliers
  • Fishing pliers with side cutter
  • 60- to 130- pound monofilament leader
  • 8/0 to 12/0 hooks
  • Aluminum crimping sleeves
  • Anti-chafe tubing
  • Spool or coil of stainless steel wire
  • Ballyhoo/bait rigging springs
  • Rubber skirts

Check out our video to see how to do it yourself. Short on some gear? If you’ve got some shopping to do, stop by your local West Marine or visit westmarine.com before getting started.
