Highlights From The Desert Storm Shugrue’s Shootout

Chances are excellent that you’re already saturated with videos of a Skater 388 catamaran called Freedom One Racing going airborne at yesterday’s Shugrue’s Shootout during the Desert Storm Poker Run. Between social and mainstream media, videos of the horrific blow-over from various perspectives are hard to avoid, much less miss it.

That the two gentlemen in the catamaran, who go by the names “Clint Eastwood and John Wayne” because they don’t want to reveal their identities out of concern for detracting from their “charity fundraising mission,” sustained only minor injuries in the crash is a miracle.
But for the record, they did post a top speed of 200.1 mph on three-quarter-mile course before things went vertical, and that made Mr. Eastwood and Mr. Wayne this year’s “Kings Of The Desert” and winners of the new-for-2025 Jones Family Cup Awards.

After displaying his Mystic C4000 catamaran in the Thursday street party and participating in the Friday poker run, Chris Richards of Angle of Attack Marine completed his full-immersion Desert Storm experience by competing in yesterday’s Shugrue’s Shootout.
Funded by longtime shootout competitor Tim Jones and his family, the awards include a total cash purse of $20,000. The purse is divided among the top finishers in multiple categories.

DCB Performance Marine’s Tony Chiaramonte finished second in the Jones Family Cup standings with a 145-mph pass in the NC2-P2 class. Hobbie Jarrad, who was hot on Chiaramonte’s tail with a 144-mph result, took third in the NC3-P2 ranks.
Other best-in-class winners included Mike Jordan with a 112-mph run in the NCO4-S2 category, Matthew Martin with a 95.6 mph run in the NV2-P1 ranks and Mike Milani with a 94.8-mph run NC1-P1 division.

Some days in the desert are hotter than others.
