Grant And Muller Teaming Up For 2025 Super Cat Campaign

Disappointed as he was to see the inaugural Race World Offshore Toronto Grand Prix go by the wayside this year, Canadian Chris Grant of the Super Cat-class Graydel team still has plenty to look forward to this season. That includes sharing the cockpit with his new throttleman Jay Muller of the former Super Cat-class WHM Motorsports team. Grant and Muller began practicing this weekend in the team’s Skater Powerboats 388 catamaran powered by HRE engines in the Gulf of Mexico off Port Charlotte, Fla.
“I am super-happy to have Jay with us,” Grant said, then laughed. “It only took me 21 years to get him away from Billy.”

Grant was alluding to Billy Mauff, the owner and driver of the 40-foot WHM Motorsports Skater catamaran. With Mauff and Muller sharing the cockpit, the boat will run in the Pro Class 1 ranks this season.
Muller also will throttle the Super Stock-class CELSIUS raceboat alongside owner/driver Chris Hopgood. Though he’s not the first throttleman to have three concurrent rides in one season, he is among the few who’ve pulled triple-duty.
But this weekend, Muller’s focus was getting to know the 38-foot Graydel raceboat and getting in sync in the cockpit with its owner/driver.

“The boat was awesome in testing, and it was really cool to be able compare it to the 40 I’ve run for so long with Billy,” Muller said. “They run very differently. The 388 runs a little flatter, which will be better for rough water. But the speed and acceleration numbers were very similar. Both are amazing boats.”
Grant was equally pleased. “It was a great testing session,” he said. “And the engines were singing.”
Until yesterday’s outing, Muller had never been in the cockpit of a Skater 388 raceboat, much less throttled one. That came as news to his new boss, who tweaked him a bit during a telephone interview for this story.
“Wow, I didn’t know that,” Grant quipped, then laughed. “Really? I don’t know if this is going to work out.”

Said Grant, “The engines were singing.”
