Get Your Boat Cabin Ready for Winter

As winter sets in, now is the time to make sure your boat’s cabin is ready for frigid temperatures. Cabins can get musty and moldy if not properly cared for over the winter months. To set yourself up for great spring boating, follow these tips.

REMOVE OLD FOOD AND LIQUIDS
Lower temperatures mean frozen liquids. Remove anything that could freeze, especially liquids in glass bottles that could shatter. Throw away all food to protect against insects and animal intruders.

PACK UP BEDDING AND CLOTHING
Remove bedding (including pillows) and clothes from the cabin. Moisture can collect and destroy any fabrics you leave on board. If it isn’t attached to the boat, remove it.

DEFROST THE FRIDGE
Defrost and wipe down your refrigerator, freezer and ice maker. These appliances will collect mold if not properly defrosted and dried.

CLEAN UP THE HEAD
Remove shampoos, conditioners, body washes, lotions and soaps.

DEHUMIDIFY
Run a dehumidifier (or two) to ensure your boat is as dry as possible. It’s one of the best ways to prevent mustiness and mold.
