Fish Beer Friday Review: Deep Seductress NZ IPA

A lesser known fact about On The Water is that Chris Megan, our Owner/Publisher, is also the head grounds keeper at our office. If you drive by on any given Saturday, you just might see El Presidente himself riding his mower over the expansive lawn that surrounds our building.
But a few weeks ago his mower died, and an abundance of rain and sunshine led to turf of extraordinary height. It was Friday afternoon, every landscaper in town was booked solid, the sun was shining, so I volunteered. I ran home, grabbed my push mower, and got to work.
Long story short, a job I estimated would take around 45 minutes ended up taking well over 2 hours. The grass was so high I had to empty the bag after a single pass, and my mower could only handle a 10-inch wide strip without bogging down. I finished up at around 4:00, sweating like a pregnant nun, just in time for beer-thirty at the office.
A few days prior we had received an amazing gift. Jason Ward, owner of Siren Lures, had delivered a case of Forty Second Brew Co’s Deep Seductress NZ IPA. I wiped the sweat of my brow, cracked one open, and took a big sip… Outstanding!
Deep Seductress is the result of a collaboration between Jason, a New Zealand native, and the fine folks at Forty Second Brew Co. This was the first time I’ve sipped on a NZ IPA. Jason had explained how the hops, which are imported from his homeland, give the brew it’s distinct bright flavor and contribute floral, fruity, and tropical notes to both the taste and aroma. Lighter than a traditional American IPA, Deep Seductress offers a citrusy welcome on the first sip with a subtle bittery smooth finish.
And on top of all that, this beer has an awesome label featuring a pack of bluefin tuna chasing a Siren lure. The artwork was created by Captain Luis DeFusco who runs Hot Reels Sportfishing in Rhode Island, making this a true collaboration of New England bluefin tuna nuts.

While two hours of lawn mowing will surely give any beer an advantage in rating, this was our highest-scoring brew to date. It is unique, complicated, and refreshing. As of right now, you can only find this gem at the Forty Second brewery in Kingston, MA, and a few local restaurants, like the Fishermen’s View on the banks of the Cape Cod Canal. But like a bluefin tuna, it’s worth the effort to seek one out.
