Racing: Englewood Beach Races To Pull Triple Duty For OPA

There’s more at stake than usual this year for the Englewood Beach Waterfest/Offshore Powerboat Association World Championships, which are slated for November 17-20 in the Southwest Florida community. In addition to crowning its own world champions and Union Internationale Motonautique world champs in the V-bottom classes, Saturday’s race will be the final event of the Offshore Powerboat Association’s own national championship series.

Prior to Hurricane Ian, the final event of the year in the OPA national series—as well as the American Power Boat Association Offshore National Championship Series—was set for Fort Myers Beach, Fla. With much of that waterfront community flattened by the Category 4 storm, the early October event had to be called off.

Tim and Cyndee Hill, the organizers or Roar Offshore Fort Myers Beach, will present trophies to the OPA National Championship Series winners during an evening awards ceremony and celebration following the Saturday races.

“We are very excited to have the opportunity to partner with our neighboring race site to the north to put some closure to Roar Offshore 2022,” said Tim Hill. “It’s going to be a rollercoaster of emotions for Cyndee and me. Our race family has been so good to us and the entire Southwest Florida community.”

But the 2022 season OPA national champions won’t be able to celebrate at full-throttle that night as they will have Sunday’s races ahead of them, and Saturday’s points will combine with those earned on Sunday to crown world champions.

“We are thrilled that  Waterfest and OPA have invited Tim and Cindy Hill of Roar Offshore Fort Myers Beach to participate with us,” said Ray LaBadie of the Englewood Beach Waterfest organizing committee. “The Saturday night awards ceremony will be at the Waverly restaurant, which had severe damage from the storm. They are scheduled to open the downstairs portion of the restaurant on November 11.

“The world championship awards presentation will be Sunday at the Sandbar Tiki Grill following the races,” he added.
