New Products: DCB Delivers M28R Catamaran No. 15

When DCB Performance Boats introduced the M28R Widebody catamaran in 2017, the boat was paired with then-white-hot Mercury Racing 400R outboard engines. And the El Cajon, Calif., company built seven of those 28-footers with supercharged 400-hp mills, which were the most powerful offerings in the Fond du Lac, Wis., company’s outboard line.

Like the last seven DCB M28R catamarans, hull No. 15 is powered by Mercury Racing 450R outboard engines.

Just two-and-a-half years later, Mercury Racing introduced the 450R outboard and it became the powerplant of choice for the cat. Just yesterday, the company’s Tony Chiaramonte and Jeff Johnston delivered its eighth 450R-powered M28R cat in Lake Havasu City, Ariz.,  to Mike DeVries of Montana.

The boat features an open-bow, family friendly layout. Though DCB has built “a handful” of M28R models with open bows, DeVries is the first to include a cuddy cabin between the cockpit and bow area.  And after spending a day on the water in his new prize, it’s safe to say he’s delighted with the finished product.

“I don’t even know how to explain it,” he said. “I love it.

Said Mike DeVries (left) next to DCB’s Tony Chiaramonte, “It is 200 times nicer than I expected.”

“I can’t believe how smooth it is at 109, 110, 120 mph,” he added. “It has no rattles or anything like that.”

Laid up with DCB’s vacuum-infused resin process, the foam-cored, half-capped partial carbon-fiber cat boasts the builder’s Phase III gelcoat scheme accented by a white powder-coated rub rail. The interior was set up with a fifth-fifty blend of Alcantara and CoolTouch vinyl. Electronics include two nine-inch Mercury Marine VesselView, a 10-inch Garmin GPS unit and DCB’s Stage IV stereo, which includes a Fusion head unit four JL Audio amplifiers, a dozen JL Audio M6 midrange speakers with LEDs and four 12-inch JL Audio M7 free air subwoofers.

As always with DCB creations, the devil is in the exquisite cat’s details.

The boat arrived at Lake Havasu yesterday on a Triple-axle Extreme Trailer with custom 18-inch FUEL KRANK wheels. DeVries said he plans to keep the 28-footer in storage facility at the lake, where he’ll enjoy the cat until heads home tomorrow.

“It’s exceptional, way more than I expected,” he said. “I knew it was going to be nice, but it is 200 times nicer than I expected.”

Though the owner lives in Montana, he plans to keep his new prize in Arizona.
