Costa Compete + Conserve Program Continues to Make Waves

The Costa Bass Derby is a natural extension of Costa’s Compete + Conserve program—a contingency initiative that rewards anglers and supports freshwater conservation. The highest-placing team with both anglers wearing Costa sunglasses will receive a $5,000 Costa bonus, part of the total $20,000 first-place prize.

Additionally, a $1,000 donation will be made in the winning team’s name to one of five designated freshwater conservation organizations. This reflects Costa’s deep-rooted commitment to protecting the lakes and rivers anglers depend on.

“We created the Costa Bass Derby to give back to the incredible community of weekend warriors who live and breathe bass fishing,” said Jed Larkin, Brand Marketing Director at Costa Sunglasses. “Last year was such a success, and we’re excited to make this year even more memorable—with more anglers, more prizes, and a continued commitment to conservation.”

Returning Champions Reflect on Inaugural Derby

Oklahoma natives Micah Littlejohn and Preston Cook took home top honors in the 2024 event with a 19-pound bag of Grand Lake largemouth. They’re eager to return in 2025.

“This event had such an awesome atmosphere last year,” said Littlejohn. “There is nothing like this that comes to Grand Lake for us weekend anglers. From the gift bags at registration to having pros like Jason Christie hanging out—it was truly a great experience.”

SCHEELS History

Three acres of potatoes were the seed for the first SCHEELS store in 1902. Frederick A. Scheel, a German immigrant, used the $300 he earned from that first harvest as the down payment on the first SCHEELS, a small hardware store in Sabin, Minn. Over the years, SCHEELS opened in surrounding communities including Fargo in 1930, where the Campus is located today. Customer interest grew and sports lines were added to the product mix.

Today, SCHEELS is a 34-store operation with stores in 16 states including North Dakota, Iowa, Minnesota, South Dakota, Montana, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Nevada, Illinois, Utah, Kansas, Colorado, Texas, Arizona, Idaho, and Oklahoma. Currently, Steve D. Scheel, the great grandson of SCHEELS founder, is the company’s Chairman Emeritus. Matt Hanson, CEO, Michelle Killoran CFO, and Todd Anderson, President oversee SCHEELS daily operations of more than 13,000 associates. Tulsa SCHEELS is the company’s 34th location, opening in 2024, and employs more than 400 associates.

As an employee owned company giving back to our local communities and fueling passion for local sports and activities are central to Scheels culture.
