Commentary—There Was Plenty Of Thunder In Cocoa Beach

Applied to anything other than weather, “thunder” is a metaphor for sound and action. So while last weekend’s Thunder On Cocoa Beach was down on sounds minus the Super V boats—offshore racing’s loudest class to be sure—and Pro Class 1 teams, there was plenty of thunder when it came to action.

Bill Pyburn and Brit Lilly of the Dirty Money team started their quest for a second Super Cat U.S. 1 title with a checkered flag. Nick Imprescia and Ian Morgan notched their first victory in the 500R Factory Stock class. Cole Leibel and Gary Ballough earned their second Super Stock-class win since joining forces. (You can read about all that and more when Eric Colby’s comprehensive coverage of the event goes live on speedonthewater.com later today.)

That translates to plenty of thunder in my book, and to suggest otherwise—as was done ad nauseum on social media—simply because two loud classes were absent isn’t just insulting to the Cocoa Beach competitors and their achievements. It demeans the efforts of local organizers Kerry Bartlett, Kevin Pruett and other members of the Thunder On Cocoa Beach organizing committee, who were handed a crappy situation they had no part in creating.

To poke mean-spirited fun at that, especially for political means, is a cheap shot.

There was plenty of thunder during Thunder On Cocoa Beach. At least if you were willing and wise enough to shut up and hear it.
